Celebrate Life, Death & Culture
Día de Los Muertos celebrations will take place in Columbus in the coming days
By Joe Frye
On the first two days of November, millions across Mexico lay marigolds, feast upon pan de muerto and build ofrendas—offerings to the souls of lost ones—as they celebrate Día De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
With its origins dating back 3,000 years, the holiday has been celebrated in Mexico in some form for quite some time. However, with the Mexican Diaspora, the holiday’s recognition has grown in the United States. In Columbus, there are multiple events for those looking to celebrate their culture or looking to learn more about a different one.
A Night to Remember: Noche de Muertos
Those looking to indulge in the food of Día de los Muertos can head over to Dos Hermanos in Easton. The restaurant is offering a multi-course dinner where guests can indulge in Mexican favorites such tamales and carne asada with mole in addition to staples of the holiday such as pan de muerto. Guests will also receive a specialty cocktail with their ticket, as it’s a 21+ event. In addition to food, guests are invited to take part in Mexican culture and dress in the Catrina theme. Catrina, a skeleton, is an icon of the holiday and of the country’s culture in general.
$69.99, Nov. 1, 6-9 p.m.
You can find tickets on Eventbrite.com.
CMA Community Days: Día de los Muertos
The Columbus Museum of Art is inviting guests into the museum to celebrate and learn about the history of Día de los Muertos. At the event, guests can expect arts and crafts, small bites and a community ofrenda. Created by local artist Renee Zamora, all are welcome to add mementos or pictures of a lost loved one to the ofrenda. Other highlights include a performance from local Mexican folk dance group, Ballet folclórico Xochihua, and drag queen Hiliana Perez’s Catrina-inspired performance.
Free, Nov. 3, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
You can find more information on the museum’s website.
Día de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life and Death
Taking place a bit after the holiday’s end is the Gente Indígena Collective’s event, “Día de los Muertos: A Celebration of Life and Death.” Hosted at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center Healthy Community Center, guests can expect a night of storytelling, poetry, food and healing, according to the organizers of the event. Additionally, there will be a contest for the best-dressed Catrina.
Donations accepted, Nov. 8, 5-9 p.m.
