With numerous cultural institutions scattered throughout the city, residents of Columbus have innumerable options to fill their off days with and learn something new. However, only one institution allows visitors to see pieces made directly by the hands of historical figures.

The Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) has served the city and its people since 1878, when it opened as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. Since its opening almost 150 years ago, the museum has won national awards and become a staple in any Columbus itinerary.

It now boasts an impressive collection of 19th and 20th century American and European art, with an emphasis on contemporary art, folk art, glass and photography, showcasing the “Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time,” according to CMA’s website.

Highlights of the collection include numerous modernist and impressionist pieces. Guests are invited to stroll the halls and view paintings by Picasso, Cezanne, Renoir and more. Notably, the museum offers guests the opportunity to take in over half a dozen pieces by the Impressionist master, Claude Monet.

For those more interested in sculpture, CMA has numerous sculptures throughout not only the halls, but also on the property’s grounds. Moreover, CMA has an impressive collection of local artists’ work, including Elijah Pierce and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Of course, beyond the permanent exhibit, CMA cycles through limited engagements including special exhibitions and special events.

For those looking to make an afternoon out of their visit to CMA, the museum offers a full- service restaurant, Schokko Café. Featuring a menu curated by Chef Laura Richmond, ingredients are seasonal and locally focused. Additionally, Schokko Café offers happy hour Tuesday-Friday, offering deals on drinks and snacks.

The Columbus Museum of Art is open Tu-We 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Th 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Fr-Su 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance online.
